Man donates Olympic torch for anti-homophobia theatre workshops
An Olympic torch-bearer from Oldham has donated his torch to the gay Pink Triangle Theatre he co-founded for use in its workshops tackling homophobia in schools.
Jason Bromley has been one of 8,000 people to carry the torch around the UK for 70 days ahead of next week’s Olympic opening ceremony.
After being part of the relay in Buxton on 29 June, Mr Bromley’s torch has appeared with the Pink Triangle Theatre at the workshops it undertakes in schools.
Mr Bromley said: “Being a co-founder of the company and being passionate about the work we do, also taking into consideration that Pink Triangle Theatre was one of the reasons I was nominated to be a torch bearer in the first place, it seemed only fair to incorporate it into the workshops we facilitate after the shows we perform.
“We took it down with us on our recent tour of Essex primary schools and the young people just loved it. It really helps to reinforce the message we portray, that Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender people are just like you.”
Following the torch’s popularity, Pink Triangle Theatre has said it will take the torch along to future performances.
Paul Burgess, Mr Bromley’s civil partner said: “This tour of Essex primary schools was a big thing for PTT, we had to change the show a little to make it more suitable, and we were totally thrilled that Thurrock local authority were taking this opportunity to educate young people about issues all too often left out of the classroom.
“We are already penned in to return to Essex for work in more schools, and are all delighted to have the Olympic Torch as one of our tools.”
