US: Hangover actor abandons anti-gay Chick-Fil-A
A star of the Hangover films and the Office sitcom, Ed Helms, says he will boycott fast food group Chick-Fil-A over its multi-million dollar support for gay marriage opponents.
The company’s chief operating officer Dan Cathy recently told the Baptist Press that the company was “guilty as charged”, when asked about its perceived opposition to equal marriage.
Reports say the company donated nearly two million dollars to equal marriage opponents in 2010 alone.
Mr Cathy said: “We are very much supportive of the family — the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that…we know that it might not be popular with everyone, but thank the Lord, we live in a country where we can share our values and operate on biblical principles.”
Actor Helms told his Twitter followers yesterday: “Chick-fil-A doesn’t like gay people? So lame. Hate to think what they do to the gay chickens! Lost a loyal fan.”
Anti-gay groups who have benefited from the fast-food chicken money include the Family Research Council, Exodus International and Focus on the Family.
LGBT campaigners have been calling for boycotts of Chick-Fil-A. In February, the student government of Northeastern University voted against the company opening an outlet on campus.
