Thousands lined the streets of San Diego for the Californian city’s Pride parade this weekend, the first such parade in US history where armed forces personnel have been allowed to wear their uniforms.
The Pentagon approved military dress at the parade on provision that “service members participate in their personal capacity and ensure the adherence to miltary service standards of appearance and wear of the military uniform.”
Although it said it was permitting uniforms at San Diego this year only, so permission would not extend to other events or future years, organisers described it as a “giant leap” towards equality. Around 200,000 are believed to have attended San Diego Pride.
