Anti-abortion activists say David Cameron will ‘pay’ for same-sex marriage policy

Following Prime Minister David Cameron’s speech reaffirming his commitment to allowing gay couples to marry, anti-abortion activists the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (Spuc) says he will get punished at the general election for his pro-equality stance.

Yesterday Mr Cameron told members of the LGBT community that the Church needed to “wake up to the case for equality, and the Church shouldn’t be locking out people who are gay, or are bisexual or are transgender from being full members of that Church, because many people with deeply held Christian views, are also gay.”

Today, Spuc’s Chief Executive John Smeaton said: “Spuc and its colleagues in many pro-family, Christian and Muslim groups will ensure same-sex marriage becomes a big general election issue, especially in marginal constituencies.

“Mr Cameron’s speech reveals that his understanding of marriage and religion is woefully simplistic and ignorant.

“His mantra of ‘equality’ totally ignores the nature, history and role of marriage, which is the union of one man and one woman ordered towards the procreation of children.”

Yesterday Mr Cameron spoke to campaigners from Out4Marriage and told them that he personally supported moves to allow same-sex marriages to take place in churches that wished to offer them.
