New York City council speaker Christine Quinn wants Chick-fil-A to leave
New York City council speaker Christine Quinn has called on fast-food outlet Chick-fil-A to leave because of its anti-equality views.
Ms Quinn, who is in a same-sex marriage, wrote to the president of New York University where Chick-fil-A has an outlet, urging him to break off his relationship with the chain.
She wrote: “Let me be clear. I do not want establishments in my city that hold such discriminatory views. We are a city that believes our diversity is our greatest strength and we will fight anything and anyone that runs counter to that.”
Last week, a Chicago politician said he will block Chick-fil-A from opening stores in the city.
Joe Moreno, an alderman who represents Chicago’s Logan Square neighbourhood, says he will use his aldermanic privilege to block the restaurant’s permit. The mayor of Boston, Thomas Menino, has also told Chick-fil-A to stay out of his city.
The chicken food chain says it is founded on Biblical values. Earlier this month, the firm’s chief operating officer, Dan Cathy, said Chick-fil-A was “guilty as charged” on its opposition to equal marriage rights.
Chick-fil-A has given millions of dollars to groups including the Family Research Council, Exodus International and Focus on the Family.
