Ohio: Two killed after car hits LGBT street event
Two people have died from injuries sustained when a car, whose driver police say had been under the influence of alcohol, hit attendees of a an LGBT street event in Cleveland, Ohio, last weekend.
Cleveland Pride described the Dancing in the Streets event as “one of Cleveland’s biggest LGBT events raising money and awareness for the AIDS Taskforce and the HIV/AIDS community”.
Mitchell Andelmo, 27, and Basil Bass, 44, are understood to have been killed when Timothy Spock’s car crashed through a steel barricade.
The SUV is reported to have hit four people in the crowd. Police confirmed Mr Spock, 35, was drunk and had three prior OVIs, a charge of ‘Operating a Vehicle (while under the) Influence’.
Tracy Jones, CEO of the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland said: “The events of Sunday are shocking and heartbreaking.
“Our hearts are with the victims and their families and loved ones. We will do whatever we can to show our support and to honor those impacted by this tragedy.”
A Facebook post reported by Newsnet5.com said of Mr Andelmo: “Mitch was amazing and we will always remember him for his positive attitude and short shorts. We love you Mitch! Please keep his girlfriend Constance in your thoughts, as she was hit as well.”
Mr Spock was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide. He appeared in court this week in Cuyahoga County.
