50 Cent speaks about his ‘lesbian mother’
In an interview with celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, 50 Cent has spoken about growing up with a lesbian mother and how he came to understand her sexuality.
The rapper said: “My mom was a lesbian. Yeah, she liked women. My whole childhood was like that.”
He added that it wasn’t always clear to him that his mom was gay, but his grandmother helped him understand the nature of her sexuality.
He said: “It’s two different things too – from a female perspective, when you see two females together, you think, oh, they’re just girlfriends, they’re close. But, with my mom, the male was missing.
“When you’re that small you don’t see things that would indicate there are other things going on. [My] grandmother would say things like ‘That kiss was a little different from all the other kisses you saw’.”
The rapper has also recently cited President Obama’s endorsement of marriage equality as an influence on his own opinion, saying: “Obama is for same-sex marriage. If the president is saying that, then who am I to go the other way?”
He then added a rather homophobic slur: “We need organisations for straight men. We do. We need organisations for straight men in the case you’ve been on the elevator and somebody decides they want to grab your little buns.”
More recently, 50 Cent spoke out in favour of Frank Ocean, who recently revealed his first love had been a man. Speaking of the singer, he said: “Frank Ocean is a talented artist, I think he’s created material that made me know his name, that impressed me.”
All of this seems like a remarkable volt-face for a man who, two years ago, following a spate of LGBT suicides, tweeted: “If you a man and your over 25 and you don’t eat pu**y just kill your self damn it. The world will be a better place. Lol.”
He later claimed this was “misinterpreted”.
In another Tweet he said: “I had my homie shoot up a gay wedding.”
It’s unclear what has caused 50 Cent’s opinions to have evolved so rapidly, but in an interview with Miss Info, he suggested his career was one factor, stating that: [“the gay] audience is probably one of the strongest audiences – look at Lady Gaga’s career . . . if you say that it’s not fine you’re gonna get attacked. You’re gonna write apology notices.”
