Questions have been flying around since the announcement of the newest Barbie to be released, and whether or not this version of the doll is actually a drag queen.

The latest incarnation of the famous doll, dubbed “Drag Queen Barbie” by the press, but officially called “Blond Diamond Barbie” was revealed by manufacturer Mattel at the weekend.

This Barbie was styled by fashion duo, The Blonds, who have styled the likes of J-Lo, Nicki Minaj and Beyonce. They released a statement denying that the new doll is a drag queen:

“It is incorrect to label the doll ‘Drag Queen Barbie.’ She is the Blond Diamond Barbie.

“She is female. She is the same Barbie that has been a doctor, a teacher and an astronaut, and now she is glamorized in The Blonds creations.”

Mattel, who created the fashion doll, also commented, but did not mention Barbie’s new nickname.

Most commentators seemed to like the idea of a drag queen Barbie, whereas some sites, such as Parenting.com Asked on Twitter: “Would you let your children play with ‘Drag Queen Barbie’?”

Another Twitter user replied to the parenting website: “”Drag Queen Barbie” might be the only Barbie I’d let my kids play with. Too bad she’s not actually a cross-dresser.”

Barbie was first released in 1959, but has seemingly caused controversy before. In 2006, a right wing fundamentalist Christian group warned that Barbie was not just a child’s toy, but also a tool for the “homosexual agenda.”

The Diamond Blond barbie will be released later this year, and will reportedly cost around £80.
