Students lobby Christian Labour MP over equal marriage
A group of students in Huddersfield have been working hard to engage with their local MP, who it seems is undecided on whether to support the measure.
The LGBT Society at the University of Huddersfield recently met with Barry Sheerman MP, a devout Chrisian for an informal discussion on the issue, and presented him with a petition of 326 signatures collected at a gay pride event last month.
Jamie Fosbrook, vice president of the LGBT society, was pleased to have been able to meet the MP and told the Huddersfield Examiner: “It was quite an informal meeting and Mr Sheerman asked us why we believed in equal rights for marriage”, Mr Fosbrook added:
“Mr Sheerman told us he was unsure and had been undecided either way, though – as a committed Christian – he supported equality in the church for women.”
The students point to the fact that the MP has a strong of record of supporting gay rights in parliament – including civil partnerships legislation – and they hope Mr Sheerman can extend this support to full marriage equality for same-sex couples.
