San Francisco: Supervisor Wiener asked to ban public nudity in ‘cock ring’ row
Gay district supervisor Scott Wiener says he is open to introducing legislation that would ban public nudity due to the increased number of men seen wearing cock rings in San Francisco’s Castro district.
The area, famous for its LGBT community and the legendary story of gay rights campaigner and politician Harvey Milk, has long been tolerant of public nudity.
However, Matthew Bajko, from the Bay Area Reporter told OutQ News of how the situation changed three years ago, when city officials turned part of a street into a public plaza. Nudists now have a place to congregate and their numbers have since increased.
Supervisor Weiner told the Bay Area Reporter that he has received a large number of complaints from residents about the number of men seen wearing cock rings – an item of jewellery for the male genitalia.
“People are absolutely repulsed by it,” said Wiener.
He also said that he was open to banning public nudity on the city’s streets, sidewalks and public plaza – but has yet to draft such legislation.
“I have not done so right now but I am considering that in the near future,” said Wiener.
“People can have whatever view they want to have on public nudity in general. But to be walking around with a cock ring on or something similar is just not acceptable, responsible behaviour,” Wiener said.
“The whole purpose of a cock ring is to draw attention to that area,” he added.
Under current San Francisco rules, as long as a person is not visibly sexually aroused, they can be naked in public.
