US: Philadelphia affordable housing for elderly LGBT people gets the go ahead
Organisers of a new, affordable housing project aimed at elderly LGBT people in Philadelphia, have received approval at a state, federal and local level..
The project, costing $19 million (£11.69.000 million), is a development containing 56 units, which will be placed in downtown Philadelphia, Centre Daily reports.
This new development had reportedly been delayed for years, awaiting tax credits from the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency, which were awarded earlier this year.
Those involved have confirmed that the project is going ahead, and that all of the $20 million (£12.23.000) funding required, had been secured.
Anti-discrimination laws meant that the housing could not be LGBT-only, but in terms of marketing, it will be LGBT-friendly, and will be placed in an area known affectionately by locals as the ‘Gaybourhood’.
The first similar housing facility was opened in Los Angeles in 2007, and Australia’s opened in 2011.
