US: Freedom to Marry to fundraise in Maryland for equal marriage ballot
A national organisation has joined the effort in Maryland to legalise equal marriage rights in the state, during November’s ballot on the issue.
Freedom to Marry, an equal marriage advocacy group, has started a political action committee in Maryland, and will begin raising money to help boost the campaign to legalise equal marriage in the vote.
Evan Wolfson, founder of Freedom to Marry said: “It is the home stretch and we want to be able to do all we can do in Maryland. We believe there is a real path to victory,” reported the Baltimore Sun.
The charity has put around $3 millon into Maine, Minnesota and Washington, but has so far only started fundraising in Maryland, seen by some as a sign of low-confidence that the campaign will win in Maryland.
Mr Wolfson said that was not the case, but conceded that Maryland does have further to go, in terms of fundraising, and said: “I’ve always said you have to do the heavy lifting.”
“There is a clear path to victory if Maryland gets the resources it needs,” he said. “We wanted to send a call to action to everyone, we all need to do what we can in all the states.”
In November, voters in Maryland, Maine, Washington and Minnesota will all vote on similar ballots to choose whether or not equal marriage becomes legal in the states.
