Stephen Fry tweet confuses fans into believing Hugh Grant came out as gay
Following the news that Hugh Grant had come out in support of equal marriage today, Stephen Fry’s celebratory tweet confused some Twitter users into thinking he was actually coming out as gay.
Hugh Grant, star of Four Weddings and a Funeral, Love Actually, About a Boy and the Bridget Jones films, has recorded a video in support of the Out4Marriage campaign to make same-sex marriage legal in the UK.
When the news broke, Stephen Fry tweeted a message saying: “Hugh Grant has come out! He says love is the same straight or gay: hurrah for him @Out4Marriage! https://youtu.be/JdsoJKRYEYg”
Some fans got the wrong end of the stick, and expressed their confusion on the matter. One user, @ify0useemeg said: “Hugh grant is gay..what?”.
PinkNews.co.uk and Out4Marriage Founder, Benjamin Cohen, had tweeted earlier in the day that some people had misunderstood the concept of Out4Marriage:
“Spoke to a complete idiot at The Sun who completely misunderstood @Out4Marriage concept. ‘Hugh Grant’s coming out as gay?’ Me: ‘No'”
Apparently they were not the only ones, and aided by Mr Fry’s tweet, new Twitter user @KevinShevlin found himself caught up in the confusion, as he wrote:
“Been on Twitter for an hour now and it’s already taught me that Hugh Grant is gay, which is indicative of everything good and bad about it”
Some people were clearly quite upset by, what they thought had come to light, @HannahPocock, tweeted: “Hugh grant is gay, this is the worst news I’ve heard all day, thank god it’s not Colin @ruthallan95”
@Gilesy116, was clearly dismayed by the false news: “My world has been shattered after finding out Hugh Grant is gay. I feel as though all women should have a moment of silence or something..”
She was not the only one, @GlitterKittyy said: “Great. Apparently Hugh grant has come out. Thats another addition to the long line of men i find attractive who turn out to be gay <bitter>”
Others congratulated the star for the news, @DecFM104 commended Grant: “Hugh Grant has just revealed that he is gay. Good for him. See Justin – its no big deal, #GayCelebs #HughGrant”
And some people were quite excited by the idea of Hugh coming out as gay, @clarastanton said: “Omg hugh grant is gay. #yaayyyy #homos”.
@Anch0rDreams tweeted with delight: “Just read that Hugh Grant has came out? That delightful arrogant little d*ck from Bridget jones is gay?! Nut, just nut.”
The news, however didn’t get past some users as, @benhammy said: “Absolutely laughing my head off at all these twats that think Hugh Grant is gay. He announced he’s “out4marriage”. Research it!”
In his short Out4Marriage video, Grant said: “Hello I’m Hugh Grant. I’m not a massive believer in marriage; I think my own biography is testament to that but I do think that love is the same for everyone. And I do think that everyone should have the same rights. If you want to get married, whether you’re gay, straight, transgender [or] whatever, you should definitely be allowed to do that”.
@kapowaz said: “I suspect you may have gotten a whole bunch of peoples’ hopes up for a second there…!”, while @alexwaters5 did seem quite excited by the prospect: “HUGH GRANT IS GAY I F*CKING TOLD YOU ALLL”.
