Anti-gay Ohio senate candidate rejected by voters and family
On US election night, Ohio lived up to its reputation for picking a presidential winner, and defeated anti-gay Republican US Senate candidate Josh Mandel at the same time.
Earlier on Monday, in an advert in the Cleveland Jewish News, Mr Mandel’s wife’s cousins published an open letter in which they criticised him for his opposition to equal marriage and of gay people serving in the US military.
“Four years ago you came into our family. We still remember the excitement surrounding your wedding, and how happy our family members were as they described it afterwards,” the letter read.
“So we were deeply saddened when you announced during your Oct. 18 debate with Sen. Sherrod Brown that you believe only some people should share this right to marry the person they love, while others should not”.
The letter ended by saying: “Nevertheless, we hope that over time, as you advance in years and wisdom, you will come to embrace the values of inclusiveness and equality as well”.
Mr Mandel lost to incumbent Ohio Democratic US Senator Sherrod Brown.
