Birmingham: Waiter goes berserk after gay couple complain about meal
A gay couple faced a tirade of abuse at a Greek restaurant in Birmingham when they complained about their meal.
Markus Busuttil, 28, and Steven, 24, were celebrating their wedding anniversary at the Athens restaurant in Birmingham city centre when a waiter allegedly started shouting that they were “an embarrassment to the world”.
Mr Busuttil, a PhD student from Malta, claimed the waiter also told them: “We don’t like people like you in Greece. We cut off your legs. Your mum is a slut. I will fucking kill you…”
The student, who met Steven five years ago while studying in Wales, told the Birmingham Daily Mail that after 15 minutes of “terror” when they returned to their meal, the waiter started to claim the couple had attacked him.
They recorded the incident on a mobile phone and gave the audio to the paper.
At one point, the alleged member of staff is recorded speaking to police on his own phone. He tells officers that he fears for his own safety and adds: “They are very aggressive for gays.”
Meanwhile, a spokesman for the restaurant admitted that the waiter did lose his temper and called the couple “queers”, but claimed he was provoked after they made “inappropriate advances” – claims which the couple deny.
A spokeswoman for West Midlands Police said: “We can confirm that we are investigating reports of a hate crime at the Athens restaurant on October 31. Statements have been taken and enquiries are ongoing.”
