Malaysia: Islamic political party members to protest against Elton John concert
Members of a Malaysian Islamic political party are set to protest against the appearance of Elton John in the country’s capital on Saturday evening.
The reason the Pan Malaysian Islamic Party objects to the concert is that the it claims the pop star promotes “hedonism”, and because of his civil partnership with David Furnish, which the party claims, could have a bad impact on young Malaysians, reported Bankok Post.
Nasrudin Hassan Tantawi, the Youth Leader for the party, commented on its reasons for protest:
“We will use the approach of submitting a memorandum [to the government] to protest against the concert,”
“This is one of the measures we intend to check social ills in the country.
“Whatever it takes, we will not let up on our dakwah [preaching of Islam] work and will continually remind all Muslims, particularly youths, not to get involved in matters that can drag them into vice.”
Sir Elton John is scheduled to play at the Arena of Stars, Genting Hills on Saturday evening.
