Ricky Martin: I wish I could come out as gay again, ‘it’s just beautiful’
Speaking at the UN on Tuesday, singer, Ricky Martin, spoke about coming out, saying he wished he could do it again, just to inspire people who might be struggling with their own sexuality.
At a UN conference on homophobia, the recording artist of, Livin’ La Vida Loca, fame, said he wished he could come out all over again, just so he could tell people struggling to come out, that “it’s just beautiful – you find love”.
Ricky Martin came out as gay in 2010, and celebrated doing so, by releasing a video which showed the Puerto Rican singer naked, waking up and coming to life as messages such as “find yourself” and “change your life” appear on his skin.
He went on to say “For many years, I lived in fear … because I was hating myself because I grew up listening to a very crooked concept: ‘You’re gay. You belong in hell.'”
Mr Martin said he was honoured to be at the United Nations, especially to be surrounded by people “fighting for one cause – equality and love and social justice”, reported the Miami Herald.
The singer has two four-year-old sons, Matteo and Valentino, both born via a surrogate, and is in a relationship with Carlos González Abella.
Despite being in a relationship with a man, Mr Martin said he had “fallen in love” with women in the past, and said he did not regret any of his past experiences
He said : “I’ve slept with women and I’ve fallen in love with them and I’ve felt wonderful things. There was love, passion. I don’t regret anything, any of the relationships I’ve lived, they taught me a lot, both men and women equally.”
