Ugandan bishop: I have never seen homosexuality in my country — only in Europe
An Anglican bishop in Uganda has said there are more pressing issues in the country than debating ways to further outlaw homosexuality.
The speaker of the country’s parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, promised to pass the notorious Anti-Homosexuality Bill by Christmas – yet MPs broke up for the year without debating the measure. The bill threatens to impose draconian sentences and even the death penalty for those found convicted of breaking the proposed law.
Bishop Godfrey Makumbi, of the West Buganda Diocese of the Church of Uganda, said of efforts to legislate against homosexuality “I also don’t condone it, but sincerely it is overshadowing other problems… Our prime problems are on everyone’s fingertips; corruption, dishonesty, impudence and impunity, human [child] sacrifice, poor service delivery and absolute poverty,” reported the Ugandan Observer.
“Realistically this is not in our culture, because our African sexual values are completely heterosexual, I personally have never seen people fancying it here, except in Europe,” Makumbi said.
He claimed that as a teacher, he had not encountered homosexuality in any of his schools.
