US: Atlanta to host 25th National Conference on LGBT Equality
The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force has named Atlanta as the host city for the 25th National Conference on LGBT Equality this month.
The conference will take place at the Hilton hotel in downtown Atlanta between 23 and 27 January, and over 3,000 lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights advocates from across the US are expected to attend.
Over 350 workshops and training sessions, four plenary sessions, and more than 15 networking sessions, symposiums and interfaith services, will be included in the schedule for the event, reports the Associated Press.
Organisers of the conference, say it aims to gather LGBT rights advocates shortly following the presidential inauguration, in order to discuss strategies and build political power.
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist José Antonio Vargas is scheduled to heardline a session on immigration issues, which will feature a panel of LGBT DREAM Act organisers.
Frenchie Davis – a Grammy-nomincated singer and former, American Idol, contestent will perform at the closing session.
Not the first time Atlanta has been in the news recently. After coming out in support of equal marriage last month, the Mayor of Atlanta reiterated his support, and gave his reasons for changing his stance, saying that “gay and lesbian couples deserve the same protection” as straight couples.
