New York: Gay man accuses police officers of carrying out homophobic attack
The New York City Police Department is launching an investigation into some of its own officers after a gay man claimed he was beaten up by cops.
WABC-TV reports the internal investigation will look into claims that several officers assaulted Jabbar Campbell who was hosting a gay pride party at his New York apartment.
They came to his home following complaints of noise stemming from the party.
The officers who showed on Sunday 13 January are accused of beating Mr Campbell while yelling homophobic abuse at him.
“They were screaming and cursing saying things like ‘fag,’ ‘homo,’ ‘a**hole,’ just a bunch of anti-gay slurs,” the 32-year-old forensic specialist, told New York Daily News.
Mr Campbell said he was beaten by the officers, who bloodied his mouth, split open his lip and caused swelling to his left eye.
He was then handcuffed and charged with resisting arrest — and spent 24 hours in police custody.
Mr Campbell’s attorney has released surveillance video of the alleged incident.
He claims it shows officers turning a surveillance camera away from Mr Campbell’s door before the assault took place
No charges have been filed against the officers.
