Indiana: Homophobic students and parents seek to ban gay classmates from attending prom
A school in the US state of Indiana is in the spotlight after some students and parents urged for gay people to be banned from attending a prom.
Sullivan High School refused to meet their request, leading to calls for a separate heterosexual-only event.
Several local church pastors support the separate prom movement.
“Christians have always been prepared for a fight. Jesus gave us armour for the front, not the back; we’re not running anymore,” said Bill Phegley from Carlisle Church in Sullivan.
Jim Davis – a local resident – criticised plans for the ‘2013 Sullivan Traditional Prom’, arguing that everyone should be considered equal.
“The feeling of being loved and belonging is universal,” said Mr Davis to local TV station NBC 2.
A Facebook group for the anti-gay prom was set up but has since been taken down.
However, a counter-group ‘Support the Sullivan High School Prom for All Students’ has gathered more than 16,411 Facebook likes so far.
