US: Famed American record executive Clive Davis comes out as bisexual
Clive Davis, the 80-year-old record executive behind pop stars Whitney Houston, Kelly Clarkson and Alicia Keys reveals in his new autobiography ‘The Soundtrack of My Life’ that he is bisexual.
Mr Davis, who has been married and divorced twice, reveals in the book that his first sexual encounter was during “the era of Studio 54.”
“On this night, after imbibing enough alcohol, I was open to responding to his sexual overtures,” writes Davis, and says that being with a man was a “welcome relief.”
Since divorcing his second wife in 1985, Mr Davis has had two long term relationships with men, one with an unnamed male doctor that ended in 2004 and then a subsequent relationship with another man ever since.
In an interview with the American news programme Nightline, Mr Davis explains that men like him are “maligned and misunderstood,” and often accused of lying because one can be either gay or straight, with no in-between.
“I’m not lying,” Davis tells the interviewer. ”[Bisexuality] does exist. For over 50 years I never had sex with a male. It wasn’t repressed. I had very good sexual relationships with women.”
The autobiography also devotes an entire chapter to working with Whitney Houston and even recounts his shock at finding out about her death just before his annual pre-Grammy party that she was expected to attend.
Mr Davis is credited with discovering talent as diverse as Janis Joplin, Santana and Alicia Keys and founded Baby Boy records with P. Diddy.
