New York: Gay man attacked on subway and called ‘faggot’ as other passengers look on
A 23-year-old man was beaten by a group of five women and one man on a subway train in New York City
Urena Morel Frankelly and his partner were eating whilst riding a No. 2 train through Manhattan on Monday, when a disagreement started between them and two women who were riding with them.
One of the women had taken pictures of the pair while her companion called them names.
Mr Frankelly reportedly asked why the woman was taking pictures, when she responded: “Feed your face, faggot.”
Her companion asked Mr Frankelly’s partner “Why you with that faggot?”
The exchange started an argument and the two women then attacked Mr Frankelly. They were joined by three other women and one man.
Mr Frankelly’s partner tried to intervene but was unable to stop him being repeatedly punched, resulting in his left eye being swollen shut and a cut above his left eye. Other passengers on the train did not try to intervene.
His unnamed partner later said: “Everyone was watching — no one helped us. That was a very scary situation for us.”
At the next stop the two men left the train and called the police.
Detectives from the Hate Crime Task Force are said to be investigating, but no arrests have been made.
