Video: Kate Middleton hoax radio station rebrands itself as 2Gay FM for Sydney Mari Gras
The radio station whose DJs made a hoax call to a British nurse who ended up committing suicide is temporarily renaming itself to mark Sydney Mari Gras.
2Day FM will become 2Gay FM this Saturday to celebrate the city’s gay festival and in support of marriage equality – which is currently banned throughout Australia.
The Australian Parliament voted against legalising marriage equality in September of last year.
Along with releasing a video, in a statement the station said: “2DayFM are strong believers of marriage equality and the station hopes to make a difference in Australia, big or small.”
Last December, the station was at the centre of a media storm after DJs Michael Christian and Mel Greig attempted to impersonate the Queen and the Prince of Wales in a hoax call to the King Edward VII Hospital in Marylebone, central London.
The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, was being treated there at the time for severe morning sickness.
Nurse Jacintha Saldanha, who transferred the call to the ward of Kate Middleton, was found dead in nurses’ housing three days later, having been overcome with grief by the hoax call.
The company which owns the station, Southern Cross Austereo, apologised profusely to the family of Jacintha Saldanha and donated £320,000 to a fund in her memory.
