Beyoncé and Madonna have both come out in support of equal marriage on the first day that the US Supreme Court has taken on two cases challenging same-sex marriage bans.

Posting on their official Facebook pages, both singers made bold statements in favour of marriage equality.

Beyoncé joined thousands in posting a modified Human Rights Campaign logo which went viral yesterday on social media, in support of striking down equal marriage bans.

She wrote: “It’s about TIME!!! #EQUALITY #MarryWhoYouLove”, in the post which over 60,000 people liked on Facebook within the first hour that it was posted.

She accompanied the post with a hand-written note which read: “If you like it you should be able to put a ring on it, #wewillunite4marriageequality”, a reference to her lyric from the song Single Ladies.

Madonna also joined in, posting a custom, hand-written post which read: “Marriage equality, let’s start a revolution”.

Accompanying the post, Madonna wrote: “#marriage equality. A revolution of LOVE !!”

Thousands took to social media sites to post the modified logo, or messages of support in place of profile pictures, to show support for equal marriage, as the Supreme Court took on the first of two landmark cases today.

In today’s Supreme Court hearing around Proposition 8, the state of California’s ban on equal marriage, the justices questioned the meaning of marriage, and challenged arguments for the ban.

The Supreme Court will also on Wednesday begin to consider an appeal against The Defense of Marriage Act, urged on by President Obama and even Bill Clinton, the former President who signed DOMA into US law.

A decision by the Supreme Court in both cases is expected by the end of June.

Over the weekend, Beyoncé’s husband Jay-Z was mentioned by fellow rapper A$AP Rocky, who hailed him as a key player in the music industry who supports equal rights.

A$AP Rocky spoke out about homosexuality in the music industry, and said that “it’s crazy” that it is still an issue.

Texas Governor Rick Perry recently voiced his distaste at Madonna’s recent appearance at the GLAAD Awards, which she attended dressed as a boy scout, and spoke out against the Boy Scouts of America’s ban on gay members.
