Tory MP Glyn Davies: Same-sex marriage is a ‘bad proposal’ but PM should not change course
A Welsh Conservative MP has described same-sex marriage as a “bad proposal”, but says it wouldn’t be sensible for David Cameron to change his mind.
Montgomeryshire MP Glyn Davies said: “It would just not be credible”.
However, Mr Davies hopes the same-sex marriage bill is defeated in the House of Lords.
Speaking to the Times journalist Matthew Parris, a gay former Tory MP who supports equal marriage, Mr Davies said: “I was and remain implacably opposed to changing the meaning of the word, ‘Marriage’.
“I thought it was a seriously bad proposal. But it would not be sensible for the prime minister to change his position. It would just not be credible – much as I would like it. I would very much like to see the legislation defeated in the House of Lords though.”
Last November, Mr Davies said he was disappointed that the prime minister, deputy prime minister and chancellor have all pledged their support towards equal marriage.
He also criticised George Osborne for going “big” on same-sex marriage in a newspaper article about the Republican Party’s defeat in the US 2012 elections.
Mr Osborne said the Republicans had lost “swathes of voters” because of their opposition to equal marriage and abortion rights for women.
