George W Bush sidesteps equal marriage discussion in TV interview by saying ‘I’m off the stage’
Former US president George W Bush refused to discuss equal marriage during a CBS interview on Thursday.
In an interview that aired on ‘CBS This Morning’ journalist Charlie Rose asked Bush about his 2004 endorsement of a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage.
“Yeah, well, I’m not, I’m not weighing in on these issues, as you know, because I’ve made the decision to get off the stage,” Bush replied. “And so I’m off the stage.”
George W Bush’s former Vice President Dick Cheney announced his support for marriage equality in 2009.
Addressing the National Press Club, Cheney, whose daughter Mary is a lesbian, said that freedom meant “freedom for everyone”.
Barack Obama became the first sitting US president to back marriage equality in May 2011.
