UKIP LGBT group: ‘We really need more candidates from the socially liberal side of society’
The UK Independence Party’s affiliated LGBT group has once again criticised several members for making offensive remarks, saying: “This kind of publicity does us no favours”.
LGBTQ in UKIP chairman Thomas Booker told International Business Times UKIP leader Nigel Farage would be contacted by the group – and they hope he will take action.
“This kind of publicity does us no favours and we really need more candidates from the socially liberal side of the society – that would be good,” Mr Booker said to IBT.
“We do believe in freedom of speech but certainly do not want to accommodate people who say LGBT people are sinners or inferior. I think it’s extremely important as local elections are the base of any campaign and if we want to get in to Westminster, that is where we must start.”
He added: “The party is still growing and it is much a party which values freedom of speech which is a fundamental right. However to have such views which are homophobic makes me extremely angry and disappointed.”
UKIP Gloucestershire County Council hopeful John Sullivan was also accused of writing on Facebook that regular physical exercise in schools can “prevent homosexuality”.
