UKIP candidate who published homophobic and biphobic flyers defeated in Staffordshire contest
UKIP candidate David Nixon, who distributed leaflets claiming legalising same-sex marriage would lead to explicit “Homosexual Sex Education”, has failed to be elected as the councillor for Stone Rural in Staffordshire.
A copy of the leaflet, which was sent to PinkNews by a reader last Friday, listed several statements by the Society for the Protection of the Unborn Child (SPUC), an anti-abortion lobby group which is opposed to equal marriage.
The statements included: “Explicit sex education is occurring in our children’s schools. When the ‘Gay Marriage Bill’ becomes law, explicit ‘Homosexual Sex Education’ will have to be taught to keep schools within the law of the 2010 Equality Bill. In 2011, £203,508 of your money was given by the Con/Lib Dem coalition to further promote homosexual education in schools.”
Another statement claimed: “Although the legal age of consent in the UK is 16, you will be aware that prosecutions are rarely brought for under-age sex when the victims are 13 to 15-years-old. On ‘equality’ grounds, the homosexual abuse of children will be treated in a similar way.”
It also illustrated a cartoon of a young boy holding a placard which said: “Rights for Bi-Sexuals We demand the right to marry With (at least) one man and one woman.”
Below it said: “Where will it end? – A child should have the right to a mother and a father.”
The leaflet declared: “David Cameron stated before the last election that he had no plans to redefine marriage. Another‘ Cast Iron’ guarantee broken!”
Earlier in the week, the UK Independence Party’s affiliated LGBT group condemned Mr Nixon over the leaflets and also denounced the now defeated Gloucestershire UKIP candidate John Sullivan.
Mr Sullivan had reportedly claimed on Facebook that regular physical exercise in schools could “prevent homosexuality” and also applauded Russia for banning gay pride marches in Moscow.
The latest local election results show the Conservatives have lost control of nine councils – with UKIP making large gains.
But in Staffordshire, the Conservatives have performed better, regaining control of Staffordshire County Council.
Votes are still being counted in the Lichfield Borough region but the party has won 32 seats, the number needed to control the 62 seat authority.
Derrick Huckfield, UKIP candidate for Keele, Knutton and Silverdale in Newcastle, is currently the only UKIP candidate to have been elected to Staffordshire County Council.
