Google introduces rainbow search bar in commemoration of Stonewall riots
Google has added a gay easter egg, which changes the search bar into rainbow colours when certain search terms are entered, to commemorate the anniversary of the Stonewall riots this week.
The easter egg appears in the US, Canadian, Brazillian, Mexican, French, Germain, Polish, Spanish and Israeli versions of the site, colours the borders of the search box with the rainbow flag.
Search terms which activate the easter egg include “homosexuality”, “lesbian”, “transgender”, “marriage equality”, and “Stonewall”.
Searches for some pride events also make the search bar a little more gay, with “New York Pride”, and “San Francisco Pride”, also activating it.
Aaron Brindle, a spokesman for Google, told the Canadian Globe and Mail, that the feature will be active for ten days, before major gay rights events across the world, many of which are timed in order to coincide with Friday’s anniversary of the Stonewall riots, which took place on 28 June 1969.
Brindle said that Google had featured other easter eggs in the past, such as the word “askew”, and “zerg rush”, however the new one is activated by the widest variety of search terms.
“Google enjoys surprising and delighting our users,” Brindle said.
