US: 70% of Facebook users have at least one gay, lesbian or bisexual friend
As the US becomes more accepting of gay people, and on the eve of the Supreme Court’s opinions in two key equal marriage cases, Facebook has found that a large majority of people are friends with at least one gay person.
Facebook announced that 70% of US users were friends with at least one person who openly lists that they are gay, lesbian or bisexual, reports TechCrunch.
It has been noted that the 70% is most probably a conservative estimate, as many users do not publicly list their sexual orientation on the site.
These figures have been hailed by many as a good sign that more people are becoming accepting of LGBT people, and that people feel comfortable enough to display their sexual orientation publicly.
The site has also added features such the ability to use Graph Search to find “my friends who are men interested in men”, or “women interested in women”.
