London: Protest to take place out Cameroonian Embassy in memory of murdered HIV campaigner
A vigil outside the Cameroonian Embassy in London will take place next week in memory of a murdered LGBT and HIV campaigner.
The body of Eric Ohena Lembemb was found at his home in Cameroon’s capital city Yaounde on Monday evening, days after he had warned of increasing attacks on LGBT support groups in the African country.
He was the executive director of the Cameroonian Foundation for AIDS and worked closely with the UN’s main HIV/AIDS agency.
Mr Lembembe’s neck and feet appeared to have been broken and his face, hands, and feet burned with an iron, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said earlier this week.
On Tuesday 23 July, campaigners from the Out & Proud group will stage a peaceful demonstration in memory of Mr Lembemb outside the Cameroonian Embassy in London, Holland Park, from 2pm-4pm.
The group are demanding “an immediate investigation” into Mr Lembemb’s death and an end to violent homophobic persecution in Cameroon.
Same-sex sexual activity is punishable by up to five years imprisonment in Cameroon.
