Exclusive: Scottish comedian Iain Stirling urges politicians to do ‘the right thing’ and back equal marriage
In a video recorded in Edinburgh City for the Equality Network’s It’s Time campaign, Scottish comedian Iain Stirling has urged Scottish politicians to follow England and Wales in legalising same-sex marriage.
The Scottish comedian, who is currently performing his stand up show ‘At Home’ at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, is the latest celebrity to voice support for equal marriage in Scotland.
Speaking from Scotland’s capital city, Mr Stirling said: “Why do I support equal marriage? The simple answer is it’s 2013, gay and lesbian people are around, they’ve been around forever, and they should have the same rights as everybody else”.
He added: “Scotland, in my opinion, has always shown a great sense of equality, and I think it’s really important as a Scottish nation that we show the rest of the world that equality is a really important issue and same-sex marriage is a totally brilliant thing”.
Mr Stirling also urged Scotland’s politicians to do “the right thing” and back the Marriage and Civil Partnership (Scotland) Bill.
He said: “For MSPs voting on this issue, what they actually need to do is put politics aside, this is an issue about equality and a society should treat everyone as equal, and that’s all they’ve got to think about.
They’ve got to drop the political agenda, drop vote gaining, and they’ve just got to vote for the right thing, which is equal marriage.”
Breakfast TV star Lorraine Kelly, the leader of the Scottish Conservatives Ruth Davidson, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie, Hollywood actor Alan Cumming, and former Scottish Socialist Party MSP Colin Fox have all recorded videos for the Equality Network’s It’s Time campaign.
The campaign is modelled on PinkNews’ Out4Marriage campaign.
