Mob attacks British man’s same-sex engagement ceremony in Haiti
An engagement ceremony involving a British man in Haiti has been reportedly targeted by a homophobic mob who threw molotov cocktails and rocks at the couple.
AFP reports several people were injured, two cars were set ablaze and windows were smashed at the residence where the ceremony took place in Port-au-Prince late on Saturday.
A local inspector told AFP only the intervention of police prevented people attending the event from being killed.
The British man, identified as a Red Cross worker called Max, was said to be unhurt.
LGBT rights campaigner Charlot Jeudy from the Haitian group Kouraj (Courage) told AFP: “There is no justification for this kind of attack on people in a private residence. Hopefully the justice authorities will react to the perpetrators of this act.”
Same-sex sexual activity has been legal in the country since 1986.
