Exclusive: Coronation Street actor John Michie backs equal marriage for Scotland
Coronation Street star John Michie has voiced his support for equal marriage in Scotland as part of the Equality Network’s It’s Time video campaign.
The 56-year-old actor is best known for his current role playing Coronation Street villain Karl Munro, and for his 12-year stint as DI Robbie Ross in ITV crime drama Taggart.
Speaking from the set of Coronation Street in Manchester, Michie said in his video: “I support equal marriage because I very much believe in society – there is such a thing as society – and I think within society everyone should be treated as an equal and included.”
He added: “I cannot see any reason why anybody would not support equal marriage and equality in general. Equal marriage would be good for Scotland because we are a forward-looking country and we want to stay that way.”
The Marriage and Civil Partnership (Scotland) Bill is currently being considered by the Scottish Parliament’s Equal Opportunities Committee before going to a Stage One vote.
Scottish National Party leader and First Minister Alex Salmond, Scottish Labour leader Johann Lamont, Breakfast TV star Lorraine Kelly, the leader of the Scottish Conservatives Ruth Davidson, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie, Hollywood actor Alan Cumming, and former Scottish Socialist Party MSP Colin Fox and Scottish Green Party Co-Convenor Patrick Harvie, TV presenter Carol Smillie and comedian Susan Calman have all recorded videos for the Equality Network’s It’s Time campaign.
The campaign is modelled on PinkNews’ Out4Marriage campaign.
