Exclusive Video: X Factor finalist Melanie Masson backs equal marriage for Scotland
X Factor Finalist Melanie Masson is the latest to speak out in support of equal marriage in Scotland as part of the Equality Network’s It’s Time video campaign.
The Scottish singer, of Glasgow, who was a contestant in series 9 of the X Factor back in 2012, spoke out at the Daily record Our Heroes award.
Speaking backstage at the awards the she explains “I support equal marriage because I think in 2013 two people in love should be allowed to be together – to legally wed if they choose to, regardless of sex.”
She adds, “If Scotland passes the equal marriage law I would be so proud. It’s something that I feel very passionate about, because the idea of two people in love not being allowed to be recognised, from a love point of view and also from a legal point of view, is appalling.”
Masson became a finalist in the X Factor last year after her version of Janis Joplin’s Cry Baby got the thumbs up from the judges. Mentored by Gary Barlow, Masson is now releasing an album and working on a new TV show whilst performing across the UK.
The Marriage and Civil Partnership (Scotland) Bill is currently being considered by the Scottish Parliament Equal Opportunities Committee.
The Committee will begin evidence sessions this Thursday, with a Stage One vote expected in November.
