Pelosi tells Putin: When you talk about people being created equal – don’t forget gays and lesbians
US House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has responded to Vladimir Putin’s statement on all people being created equal under God by saying the Russian President needs to include gay citizens too.
Speaking to reporters during her weekly briefing on Thursday, the senior Democrat highlighted the LGBT political and legal situation in Russia and responded to an open letter from President Putin published in the New York Times regarding Syria.
“What I found interesting was the closing,” Pelosi said. “He says when we pray to God he judges us all as — I don’t know exactly was his words are — but he says that we are all God’s children. I think that’s great. I hope it applies to gays and lesbians in Russia as well.”
Earlier this month the topic was raised by US President Barack Obama and UK Prime Minister David Cameron in discussions with campaigners against the backdrop of the G20 summit in St Petersburg, Russia.
The country is hosting the Winter Olympics in 2014.
In an open letter to the American people on possible US military action against Syria, President Putin ended his plea for peace by stating: “We are all different, but when we ask for the Lord’s blessings, we must not forget that God created us equal.”
