Gay husband of Facebook co-founder formally running for US Congress
Sean Eldridge, an investor and the husband of Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes, has officially launched his campaign for New York’s 19th Congressional District seat in 2014.
The seat is currently held by Republican Chris Gibson.
Eldridge, a multimillionaire Democrat from Ohio and advisor of the US campaign group Freedom to Marry, is also president of New York based investment fund Hudson River Ventures.
He and Hughes married last year at their home in New York after announcing their engagement in 2011.
Born in 1986, if Eldridge wins the congressional seat, he’ll be just 27, making him one of the youngest members of Congress in 2014.
His campaign website says: “In Congress, Sean will continue to protect our Constitution, our freedoms, and our right to privacy. He will work to ensure that every American receives equal protection under the law and that no one is fired from their job or denied housing because of who they are or who they love.”
Eldridge made his official announcement last night on Twitter with a three minute advert. New York Magazine notes how the clip forgoes mention of his most effective work with Freedom to Marry and his connections to New York’s political elite – opting instead to stress his success as a local businessman.
Eldridge hosted fundraisers for Governor Andrew Cuomo during his time on the campaign trail in 2010.
