England Women’s football captain joins campaign against homophobia
The captain of the England Women’s football squad has offered her support to the Football v Homophobia campaign.
Casey Stoney, 31, supported a 5-a-side tournament at the University of Nottingham, and watched on as the Justin Fashanu All Stars, and the Bolton Ambassadors Veterans, picked up the winners’ medals.
Stoney, who recently led England to victory in World cup qualifying matches against Turkey and Belarus, said: “It was great to be a part of such a proactive event like this and Nottingham University deserve a lot of credit for organising it.
“There is absolutely no place for discrimination in any walk of life so of course I was delighted to put my name to it.
“Football is a great way of bringing different groups of people together – and hopefully tournaments like this will help raise awareness of the Football v Homophobia campaign.”
The event was organised by the university’s LGBT staff.
Claire Henson is a member of the LGBTQ staff network and she said: “The tournament was a wonderful day and everyone taking part played in a great spirit.
“Having Casey here was a true honour and her question and answer session was inspirational.”
