Poland: Group blocked by authorities for trying to pass off anti-gay protest as ‘pro-egg’ rally
Authorities in Poland have blocked plans for an anti-gay protest after realising that an application to hold a rally promoting the benefits of eggs was submitted by a prominent nationalist group.
The anti-gay protest had been scheduled to to coincide with a gay pride march in the city of Wroclaw on Saturday.
Members of the National Revival of Poland (NOP) had applied to host an action billed as “popularizing a healthy lifestyle through providing information about the advantages of an egg-based diet,” Polskie Radio reports.
Wroclaw town hall rejected the application however after realising that it had been been filed by the nationalist group. A NOP-related website referred to the planned action against “pink terrorists” as being led by the organisation’s “Culinary Section.”
Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza speculated that the ruse may have been used as an excuse to throw eggs at those participating in the Wroclaw Equality Parade.
The NOP were responsible for disrupting last year’s pride march in the city, and its members were among 50 counter-protesters who were detained overnight. The town hall has offered the group the opportunity to hold a counter-demonstration at a different time, so as to avoid any disruption to the event.
Last year’s Wroclaw gay pride march was attended by an estimated 300 people, with organisers hoping for an even bigger turnout this year.
Earlier this year, Poland’s first openly gay MP was attacked after participating in Warsaw’s Equality Parade.
In the same month, the country’s Prime Minister backed down over his support of same-sex civil unions, admitting that cross-party opposition to the policy is too strong.
Poland is home to Anna Grodzka, the world’s first, and only transgender MP. You can read her exclusive interview with PinkNews.co.uk here.
