US: California introduces bill to allow children to have more than two parents
The Governor in the US state of California on Friday signed a bill which allows children to legally have more than two parents.
The Los Angeles Times reported that the bill, proposed by Senator Mark Leno, is to allow the state to address family situations where finances will now be able to be shared among all people responsible for the child.
The legislation benefits LGBT parents, and families where more than two adults are responsible for a child.
Senator Leno said: “Courts need the ability to recognise these changes so children are supported by the adults that play a central role in loving and caring for them… It is critical that judges have the ability to recognize the roles of all parents so that no child has to endure separation from one of the adults he or she has always known as a parent.”
Conservative groups in the state argued that children should only be seen to have two parents, one male and one female, in the eyes of the law.
The president of the Pacific Justice Institute Brad Dacus, said: “This is in the long run going to be a mistake,
“The ones who are going to pay the price are not the activists, but it’s going to be children, who will see greater conflict and indecision over matters involving their well-being.”
