Rugby star Gareth Thomas announces book deal
Former rugby player Gareth Thomas has announced a deal to write his memoirs with the publisher Ebury Press.
Thomas became rugby’s first openly gay professional player to come out and continue playing in 2009.
After playing for Cardiff and Bridgend, in 2010 Thomas switched codes from rugby union to Wrexham-based Super League club Crusaders.
He announced his retirement in October 2011.
The book, to be published in September 2014, will be ghosted by sportswriter Michael Calvin.
Ebury Press called the memoir “an incredible story of one man facing up to the truth with no idea of the impact it will have on his life,” adding: “Although some of Gareth’s story is out there and has already inspired and given hope to millions, there are some things he’s never talked about and only the intimacy of a book can do it justice.”
Thomas said: “I feel ready to write this book now. I hope it will help others have the courage to deal with whatever life throws at them …This book will allow me to talk honestly and frankly about my life and share that story with others.”
In 2010, Hollywood actor Mickey Rourke announced plans to make a film of the life of Thomas.
Although there has been little news of the project of late.
