LGBT rights supporters encouraged to wear purple for spirit day
LGBT rights supporters across the world are to update their social media profiles, and wear purple, in support of Spirit Day.
Millions of people around the world already wear purple in support of Spirit Day on 17 October, in order to speak out against bullying.
Spirit Day was created by Canadian teenager Brittany McMillan. The initiative has also been championed by GLAAD, which urges people to Tweet about the day and turn their Facebook profiles purple.
GLAAD says it aims to “work to create a world in which LGBT teens are celebrated and accepted for who they are.”
On the rainbow flag, purple represents ‘spirit’.
Users of Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and other networks can use an app to turn their profile pictures purple, while Facebook will also be turning two of its pages — Facebook Diversity and Facebook Safety — purple for the day.
Twibbon, allows users to easily update social media profiles to encompass Spirit Day.
