US mayor: ‘God is against queers and don’t ram gay marriage down my throat!’
The mayor of a small town in South Carolina is under fire for responding to the arrival of equal marriage elsewhere by saying “I don’t want it rammed down by throat”, and for repeatedly using the word “queer” in a Facebook post.
Linda Oliver is the mayor of West Union, which has a population of approximately 300.
Responding to the recent decision of Buncombe County in North Carolina to approve marriages licences for same-sex couples, Oliver published a homophobic rant on Facebook and used the word “queer” several times.
“What’s it gonna take to get these queers to realize they don’t need a piece of paper. God will not bless their union because he plainly speaks against queers in the Bible.”
Having deleted the comments, Oliver told Fox Carolina that she would now use the word “homosexuals” instead but also stated: “I don’t want [same-sex marriage] rammed down my throat.”
“All I can say is if people want to crucify me that’s fine. I know that following Jesus, I’m going to be crucified,” Oliver said.
“What I’m emotional about is because my feelings – the way I feel toward homosexuals is how I’ve been brought up.”
Oliver has been criticised by several of West Union’s residents – with some describing her as a “bigot”.
