Manchester: Community health centre receives LGBT award
A medical centre in Manchester has received a bronze award for its efforts to be fully LGBT inclusive.
The Lesbian & Gay Foundation (LGF) say Mauldeth Road Medical Centre in Fallowfield is a model of best practice.
Practice Manager Cath Forrester said: “We are committed to providing a fully inclusive service to all patients regardless of sexual orientation, disability, race, religion or belief, age, sex, gender re-assignment, marriage and civil partnership or pregnancy and maternity.”
She added: “We recognise that it is important not to treat all patients the same, but recognise different patients’ have various needs and we are committed to delivering exceptional service to every single patient; and we are proud to display our award.”
GP Kathy McGuirk said: “Making small changes such as using the term ‘partner’ rather than ‘husband/wife’, can make a huge difference to a patient. It ensures they feel comfortable in talking about their healthcare issues – rather than being worried about having to ‘come-out’ to their Doctor”.
Pride in Practice works across the country to help GP practices become more inclusive. South Manchester Clinical Commissioning Group has signed up to the scheme, along with many other practices across the UK.
