Gay director John Waters: Heterosexual porn has become ‘obscene’
Cult director and writer John Waters claims heterosexual porn – unlike gay porn – has now lost the notion of love-making; illustrated by the often violent portrayal of women.
Walters, best known for directing 80s camp classic musical comedy ‘Hairspray’, told BBC Radio 3 ahead of his appearance at Liverpool’s Homotopia festival: “I agree that some porn is obscene today.” He added: “Someone said ‘it’s not making love, it’s making hate’. Especially heterosexual porn.
“I think in the gay porn you can tell they’re both in on it. In some of the hetero porn [with] the [treatment of] women you cannot tell. But that is the limits of free speech we have to put up with.”
The 67-year-old director also confessed that he fantasised about growing up to run a porn film theatre during his conservative moral upbringing in 1950s Baltimore.
“I knew what I wanted to be – the filthiest person alive,” he said to the BBC’s Samira Ahmed.
