Baroness Tina Stowell receives Spectator Award for Peer of the Year
Baroness Tina Stowell of Beeston has been given the Spectator award for Peer of the Year in its 2013 Awards.
Baroness Stowelll was the Tory peer who was given the gruelling task by David Cameron of guiding the equal marriage bill for England and Wales through the House of Lords. She was previously given the PinkNews Award for Politician of the Year.
In debates around the equal marriage bill, Baroness Stowell on several occasions used a fictional marriage to actor George Clooney, in order to explain to the House the difference between the legal definitions of adultery and unacceptable behaviour.
The Spectator Blog reads: “Entering politics at the age of 18, Stowell managed to use her know-how to steer gay marriage through the House of Lords with charm, persuasion, steel and apparent ease.”
Baroness Stowell was formerly the Head of Corporate Affairs at the BBC.
