Tory MP Mike Freer receives Spectator Award for Parliamentary Speech of the Year
Conservative MP Mike Freer has been honoured with the Spectator Award for Parliamentary Speech of the Year.
Openly gay Tory MP Mike Freer won the award for his heartfelt and moving speech in support of equal marriage at February’s second reading of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act.
On receiving the award, Mr Freer told PinkNews: “The reaction to the speech at the time was a wonderful surprise and made it all worthwhile. To receive recognition from newspapers and magazines such as The Spectator (who followed where Pink News led) means that equal marriage is recognised as a milestone in the whole of British politics and not just in the LGBT Community.”
The Spectator website read: “Freer made one of the most moving, personal and potent speeches in the house this year over equal marriage. ‘This isn’t about a tax break or legal protection’, he said. ‘This is who I love and this is who I am.’”
