Baroness Stowell, Metro newspaper and writer Damian Barr win Stonewall Awards
Communities Minister Baroness Stowell of Beeston, journalist Grace Dent and writer Damian Barr were among the winners at last night’s annual Stonewall Awards at the V&A in central London.
The gay rights charity’s Hero of the Year award went to Labour peer Lord Alli and the Russian LGBT Network.
CBBC’s Marrying Mum and Dad won Broadcast of the Year. Coronation Street actor Antony Cotton was named Entertainer of the Year.
The Metro newspaper was crowned Publication of the Year. The Independent’s Grace Dent took home Journalist of the Year. Damian Barr, author of Maggie and Me, a book about the late Lady Thatcher, was named Writer of the Year.
Stonewall gave its Community Group of the Year award to the Quaker Lesbian & Gay Fellowship. Advert of the Year went to Mamas & Papas.
Bigot of the Year went to US anti-gay Christian Pat Robertson.
On Friday, Lord Rennard, the former chief executive of the Liberal Democrats, and Lib Dem peer Baroness Barker said the Stonewall Awards failed to recognise the Lib Dems’ contribution to this year’s legalisation of same-sex marriage for England and Wales – because unlike Labour and the Conservatives – no Lib Dem politician received a Stonewall award.
