Alec Baldwin attempts to calm furore over alleged homophobic slur by joking that he loves another man
Alec Baldwin apparently attempted to calm anger over an alleged homophobic slur he used against a photgrapher last week, by making a joke about being in love with a gay co-worker at a conference.
Baldwin was recently suspended from his MSNBC talk show after hurling anti-gay abuse against a New York photographer. Baldwin was condemned by GLAAD for a pattern of incidents during which he has used the slurs.
At the technology conference in San Francisco, Baldwin jokinly propositioned a male member of his team, saying: “I want you to be my love, Matt. I love you, Matt. I love you in that way.”
He went on to say that he had loved some men more than women in his lifetime, although never sexually. Continuing, he said he never wanted to cause offence.
He added: “If in any context in the world that we live in today, if any word is remotely offensive to people, then I’m perfectly willing to learn a different word.”
In June, GLAAD gave Baldwin the benefit of the doubt after he apologised in an open letter calling a Daily Mail writer a “toxic little queen”:
“My ill-advised attack on George Stark of the Daily Mail had absolutely nothing to do with issues of anyone’s sexual orientation.
“My anger was directed at Mr Stark for blatantly lying and disseminating libelous information about my wife and her conduct at our friend’s funeral service. As someone who fights against homophobia, I apologize.”
In a series of tweets, Baldwin abused Mr Stark, urging his followers to “straighten out this f****ing little bitch.”
